5 Days Northern Vietnam by Private Car: Hanoi, Ha Long, Sapa, Ninh Binh
A slow itinerary through Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and Sapa without motorbikes—ideal for families, older travelers, and anyone who prefers a car over two wheels.

Private car travel in northern Vietnam trades the flexibility of a motorbike for comfort, safety, and a driver who knows the roads. This five-day loop covers the region's landmarks without rushing: a night in Ha Long Bay, two days in Sapa for trekking and hill-tribe villages, and a return through Ninh Binh (닌빈 / 宁平 / ニンビン)'s limestone valleys.
Day 1 — Hanoi
Start in the capital with a full day to settle and explore on foot. The Old Quarter's narrow streets—Hang Dao, Hang Ngang, Ta Hien—are meant for walking anyway. Grab "[pho](/posts/pho-vietnam (베트남 / 越南 / ベトナム)-noodle-soup-guide)" or "banh mi" for lunch at a street stall; both cost 20,000–40,000 VND.
In the afternoon, visit Tran Quoc Pagoda on the Red River's eastern bank (free entry, 5 km from Hoan Kiem Lake), or the Temple of Literature, the old royal university now a museum (30,000 VND, 3 km south). Both are quieter than the lake itself.
For dinner, skip tourist traps around Hoan Kiem. Instead, head to Bat Trang pottery village (15 km southeast) or eat at a local "com tam (껌땀 / 碎米饭 / コムタム)" spot in Dong Da district—broken-rice dishes are cheap (30,000–50,000 VND) and authentic.
Arrange your car and driver for Day 2 onward this evening. A private car with driver costs 800,000–1,200,000 VND per day (2024 rates) for a sedan carrying up to four people; negotiate multi-day discounts with your hotel or a travel agent.
Day 2 — Ha Long Bay (overnight cruise)
Departure at 7:00 AM. The drive to Halong (하롱 / 下龙 / ハロン) City is 160 km and takes 2.5–3 hours via the coastal highway. Your driver drops you at the pier.
Board an overnight "junk" (traditional wooden boat) or modern cruise vessel at 11:30 AM. A mid-range 2-day/1-night cruise runs 1,500,000–2,500,000 VND per person, including meals and lodging. You'll cruise past limestone karsts, stop for swimming, and dine on fresh seafood (often included). Most boats offer a sunset and sunrise deck time, which beats any tour-bus photo op.
Stay overnight aboard. Wake early for a kayak into Luon Cave or a tai chi session on deck if you want. Breakfast is simple but filling.

Day 3 — Sapa (overnight train + early-morning transfer)
Return to Halong City pier by 10:00 AM. Your driver meets you and drives back to Hanoi (하노이 / 河内 / ハノイ) (2.5–3 hours), arriving by 1:00 PM. Check into a hotel near Hanoi Station or skip the city stop entirely and go straight to the station.
Catch an evening train (6:00 PM or 9:00 PM departure) to Lao Cai. An overnight berth in a soft-sleeper cabin costs 400,000–600,000 VND. You'll arrive in Lao Cai by 5:00–6:00 AM.
Here's where the private car becomes valuable: your driver (or a pre-arranged local driver) meets you at Lao Cai station and drives you 40 km up the winding mountain road to Sapa (사파 / 沙坝 / サパ) (1.5 hours). No shared minibus crowds, no middle-man markups. Drop your bag at a hotel and rest until midday.
Sapa sits at 1,600 m elevation; the air is cool and moist year-round. Spend the afternoon exploring the town's market (where you'll see H'Mong and Tay hill-tribe vendors) or walking to nearby waterfalls. Dinner at a homestay or simple restaurant (grilled fish, leafy greens, rice—50,000–80,000 VND per person).
Day 4 — Sapa trekking
A full day of trekking. Options:
- Fansipan trek (6–8 hours): 3,143 m peak via switchback trail. Fit hikers can summit; others turn back partway. Hire a local guide (300,000–500,000 VND for the day).
- Hill-tribe village loop (3–4 hours): easier, visiting H'Mong or Tay homes in Cat Cat or Sin Chai villages. Same price for a guide.
- Muong Hoa Valley (half-day): rolling farmland, rice paddies, fewer tourists.
All treks start early (6:00–7:00 AM). Bring water, a light jacket (it's cool), and insect repellent. Lunch is usually included with a guide—a simple meal of rice, vegetables, and canned meat eaten at a village homestay.
Return to Sapa town by 4:00 PM. Dinner and an early night.

Day 5 — Sapa to Ninh Binh return
Early departure (6:00 AM) for the drive back to Lao Cai and the southbound journey to Ninh Binh. The drive is 280 km and takes 4.5–5 hours, with a lunch stop in a roadside town (Yen Bai province).
Arrive in Ninh Binh by 2:00–3:00 PM. Check into a hotel in town or in nearby Tam Coc village (about 10 km away, where the landscape is more scenic).
Spend your final afternoon on a "coracle" (traditional bamboo basket boat) through Tam Coc's three grottos. The ride drifts slowly under limestone cliffs, past rice paddies and a few villages; 100,000 VND per person, 1 hour. Alternatively, rent a bike and pedal along the valley floor (flat, 15 km round-trip).
Dinner in Ninh Binh town or Tam Coc village (river snails, grilled fish, "banh cuon (반꾸온 / 蒸米卷 / バインクオン)"—crepe-rolls—40,000–70,000 VND). If you have a flight or train to catch the next morning, your driver can drop you at Hanoi airport or station (100 km, 1.5 hours) at dawn.
Practical notes
Book the Ha Long cruise and train tickets 1–2 weeks ahead; both sell out during Tet (뗏 (베트남 설날) / 越南春节 / テト (ベトナム旧正月)) and the April–May/September–October shoulder seasons. For the private car, negotiate a package rate covering all five days—many drivers offer 20–30% discounts for multi-day bookings. Bring a light rain jacket; northern mountains receive drizzle almost any season. ATMs are available in Hanoi and Sapa town, but not in remote trekking areas—carry cash. Mobile coverage is patchy in Sapa; don't rely on maps for the hike.
